Spring 2025 Learning Session Highlights: Harnessing Collection Knowledge for Improvement
Another productive and inspirational Spring 2025 Virtual Learning Session brought together 86 participants from 21 centers, focused on harnessing collective knowledge to accelerate data-driven improvement. We explored network priorities, implementation science, and member research.
Highlights from this collaboration themed Learning Session include:
Community, Hope, and Registry Success
Network PI, Dr. Esi Morgan, MD, MSCE, emphasized community and collaboration, urging hope and vision in advancing healthcare quality improvement. Measures Committee Lead, Dr. Julia Harris, MD, called for improved network performance and addressing health disparities, and we collectively celebrated the nearly 8,000 active patients in the registry. Tana Webb (Parent Advocate, Children’s of Alabama) shared her daughter's JIA story, reminding us that JIA kids are "normal kids."
Keynote Focused on the Science of Implementation
Keynote speaker Dr. Christian Helfrich, PhD, MPH (University of Washington) introduced implementation science, highlighting that healthcare systems are complex and dynamic. He stressed patience, managing unintended consequences, and considering political aspects. His call-to-action focused on iterative testing, adapting from model founders, involving all stakeholders (especially patient/parent partners), and navigating the politics of change.
Leveraging PR-COIN Data & Collaboration
PR-COIN members presented impactful research and QI initiatives:
PRO Standardization: Dr. Nancy Pan, MD (Hospital for Special Surgery) shared survey results on Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) completion, published in Frontiers in Pediatrics.
New JIA Patient Education: The JIA Patient Education Project Team presented new family-facing materials, seeking pilot centers for a Pfizer-funded grant.
Fellow QI Projects: Dr. Chelsea Reynolds, DO, (Medical University of South Carolina) discussed increasing SLE Epic SmartForm usage; Dr. Rina Ferguson, MD, MBA, (Seattle Children’s) presented on standardizing chronic pain education.
Pain Toolkit & Terminology: Kerry Ferraro (Parent Advocate, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia) led an interactive session to finalize a JIA pain toolkit and vote on terminology. We are grateful to the PR-COIN Parent Working Group for creating another amazing resource for patients and families!
Enhanced Data Platform: Hive Solutions' new CEO, Yousuf Ahmad, DrPH, highlighted Hive's goal of an easy-to-use, intelligent platform for data completeness. Magen Phillips, MPH, reviewed population management functionality and the Phlox overhaul.
We extend thanks to our members for another collaborative and productive learning session. We are grateful to our community for making the work we do possible!
